eta platform has teamed up with Microsoft to integrate a variety of Microsoft Office 365 products into the Virtual Reality (VR) platform, encouraging businesses to work in virtual worlds.
On Oct. 11, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said during Meta's Connect 2022 keynote that its Teams video calling app would incorporate Meta's "Quest" and newly unveiled "Quest Pro" VR headsets, enabling individuals to gather in a virtual environment similar to a boardroom.
Microsoft productivity apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SharePoint will also become available in VR. Nadella mentioned that future feature includes streaming a Windows Cloud computer to headsets.
According to Nadella, Microsoft's enterprise-level mobile device and access control applications will be suitable with Meta's Quest and Quest Pro headsets, allowing businesses to manage and secure VR headsets in their corporate networks like they would computers or phones.
Meta hopes that its Quest Pro headset, which includes a slew of new features, will entice users to work virtually. The company claims that the new headset is more comfortable, performs better, and has better clarity and resolution than its predecessor.
The Quest Pro is also said to have more intuitive feedback on its hand controllers and real-time expression tracking, where the user's virtual avatar mimics real-life facial gestures such as smiles and winks.
In his keynote, Nadella stated that the pandemic had created a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in previously office-based work environments, referring to the continuing remote work policies that were first implemented due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Since changing its name from Facebook Inc to Meta last year, the company has been focused, and resources have transitioned heavily toward developing what Zuckerberg refers to as an open and interoperable Metaverse.
The firm's research and development arm, Reality Labs, has spent billions of dollars to create the necessary hardware and virtual worlds, spending $5.7 billion alone in 2022.
Amidst the losses, Zuckerberg remained steadfast about the massive opportunity in a July Q2 earnings call, even admitting that such losses could last for several years.
