hangpeng "CZ" Zhao, the CEO and founder of global cryptocurrency exchange Binance, is among today's most prominent cryptocurrency figures.
Let’s have a quick look at his rags-to-riches story.
CZ was born in a village in Jiangsu, Shanghai, and moved to Vancouver, Canada when he was 12 years old. In college, he majored in computer science engineering. He managed to spend the next several years developing trading systems for well-known exchanges, including the Tokyo Stock Exchange and Bloomberg Tradebook.
He left his highly paid job in 2005 to launch his own business and relocated to Shanghai. He discovered Bitcoin in 2013, after eight years of establishing his company, and it happened to change everything for him.
CZ caught the Bitcoin bug and went all-in on the newly emerging digital currency in 2014, auctioning his house and purchasing BTC at an average price of $600 per coin. Bitcoin's price dropped quickly and plummeted to $200, but his faith in the technology helped him ride out the bear market. After two years, the price increased again.
After that, he launched Binance in July 2017, at the height of the initial coin offering era, nearly four years after discovering Bitcoin. Binance is now one of the leading global cryptocurrency exchange in terms of daily trading volume.
