In September, user activity on blockchain gaming decentralized applications (DApps) increased significantly, with a number of games reporting important growth in the number of active users.
According to the data, seven of the top ten games in terms of the number of unique wallet addresses engaging with dapp's smart contracts have risen in the last 30 days, with all of the top five games.
DappRadar noted in a Sept. 27 blog post that eight of the existing top ten blockchain games are mobile-first, which could bring millions of subscribers to the blockchain, stating:
"Dapp games like Gameta, Benji Bananas, Upland, and Trickshot Blitz enable anyone with a mobile device to earn cryptocurrency with minimal prior knowledge, investment, or risk."
One possible reason for the increased prominence of blockchain games amidst the bear market is the concept of bleeding in the bear and running in the bull.
Animoca Brands' Benji Bananas saw the greatest user increase, with a 16.54% increase over the last 30 days. Notably, until March of this year, this game was only available as a Web2 mobile app. Animoca then introduced play-to-earn (P2E) elements via the Ape Coin, which is affiliated with the Bored Ape Yacht Club (APE).
While it is unclear what caused the increase in Benji Bananas users, it did host a P2E gaming event this month that provided a series of useful in-game NFTs to the winners.
Only Axie Infinity, Trickshot Blitz, and Upland have decreased in the last 30 days. The increase in blockchain gamers this month comes as reports in a Sept. 28 article that the strongly correlated NFT market trading "frenzy is almost dead," citing a 97% drop in overall NFT trading volumes since January as evidence.
As Animoca Brands co-founder Yat Siu pointed out on Twitter on September 30, focusing solely on NFT sales volume does not necessarily paint the entire picture of NFTs or gaming.
Siu emphasized that NFT prices have typically dropped in line with the price of their synced assets, such as Ether (ETH), while many games — which don't often make headlines — require relatively cheap NFTs. Instead, he highlighted that the focus should be on user interactions and the number of people joining Web3.
According to DappRadar, Gods Unchained has seen a substantial increase in active accounts over the last 30 days, increasing by 28.50% to around 14,180. The game still has a long way to go to catch up to the top 10, with a user count of twenty-eighth.
